Saving Energy By Changing Appliance Habits

Change Appliance and Electronic Habits - In the average US home, appliances are said to make up around 20% of energy consumption so there is something to be said for just altering habits. For example, fridges and freezers shouldn't ever be kept next to a window nor should they be next to ovens as they will have to work harder to stay cold.

Furthermore, computers have no reason to be on when they aren't being used. As technology continues to grow, computers are making for a larger percentage of energy consumption but this can be reduced if we switch even the monitors off when we don’t need them.

When your next appliance breaks or if you want to invest now, make sure you buy appliances that are energy efficient according to their star rating from the US Department of Energy. If just 10% of homes did this when shopping for appliances, we could cut carbon emissions by the equivalent of over 1.6 million trees.

Finally, a big one in recent years has been the growth of chargers because we need them for phones, tablets, laptops, handheld gaming systems, and more. Even when they aren't connected to the device, they consume energy when plugged in so get out of the habit of leaving it plugged in even when you aren't using it.
